Project in Process: Making Small Spaces Work: Two Jersey City Apartment Remodels
“Make it work!” is the famous sing-song mandate from Tim Gunn on Project Runway. Just as Gunn’s signature tough-love command spurs participants’ creativity in the fashion realm, so too is this our motto in home renovation, especially when our clients live in smaller spaces.
Project #1: Making Room for a New Addition
One of these families is preparing for a new baby! We are so excited to help them retrofit their apartment to make room for their new bundle of joy – and, of course, all the gear that babies need.
We are transforming the second bedroom into a functional nursery. This work includes moving a wall to create a new entryway, providing new lighting solutions, painting, and adding a new custom built-in closet.
We’re also building a new linen closet, as well as retrofitting the coat closet in the entryway and the master bedroom closet. The new closets will offer space for bulky items including baby’s stroller, bassinet, and infant car seat. Installing brand-new closet organizers will allow for easier storage of coats and shoes. The master bedroom closet will include shoe shelves, plenty of room for hanging clothes, and mesh drawers for odds and ends.
Project #2: Creating Spaces That Do Double Duty
Our second Jersey City apartment renovation is focused on helping a family find creative solutions to maximize their space.
The family of four (plus a furry friend) had been feeling a bit cramped in their small two-bedroom apartment. They came to us with two requests.
Their first goal is to enclose an open dining area into a semi-private office/den. This will provide a much-needed work-from-home solution, as well as a place for guests to stay. The second goal is to transform a giant storage closet into a dining nook, and to find alternate storage solutions for necessary items.
We presented a few different design solutions that we think will meet their needs, and we’re excited to share the results with you soon!
When we’re finished, these two families will have less clutter, simpler ways to store their things, and more open space to enjoy being together. Once we’ve finished remodeling, we’re confident that these families will have spaces that work for them.
