“Trust the design process.” That’s a credo we live by here at Houseplay! By trusting the process, you can end up with a final product that’s unexpected – but meets your needs even better than what you had originally envisioned.

Our clients for this Jersey City historic home remodel renovated when they first bought their home just before their son was born. He’s now ten years old, and they’re ready to make some changes!

The current house has just one full bathroom. As their son approaches teenagerhood, our clients wanted to create a new master suite that would include an additional full bathroom. They also wanted more closet space and a better flow to the second floor of their home.

We originally explored the idea of creating a partial addition for the master suite. Since theirs is an historic home, our team did extensive zoning research and worked closely with the Jersey City Historic Preservation Commission.

As we worked through the design process, the couple realized that the timeline for an addition would be much longer than they were hoping. And as we better understood their priorities, our team at Houseplay saw ways that we could optimize their existing footprint to meet their needs with relative ease.

Instead of adding an addition, we are creating an ensuite master bathroom within the existing master bedroom. To optimize closet space, we are removing a ladder from the master closet and instead providing roof access via a hatch with dropdown ladder in the hallway. We’re also replacing a skylight and adding a second skylight over the staircase landing.

To make the rest of the upstairs space flow better, we are shortening the hallway bathroom to widen the staircase landing and widening the entrance to the upstairs sitting room to give it a more spacious feeling.

Finally, we’re freshening up the space throughout the house by rebuilding the staircase, leveling uneven floors, and giving the walls a fresh coat of paint.

We’re really excited about where this design has taken us! Stay tuned for the final product.
